Australian Safer Communities Awards

At a ceremony at Parliament House, Canberra on November 11th, The Hon Rob McClelland, Federal Attorney - General, presented the Tasmanian Flood Warning Consultative Committee with the National Award for the Floods and You Community Awareness Project in the Education, Training and Research category of the 2008 Australian Safer Communities Awards.

This is a wonderful achievement for Tasmania, congratulations to all involved.

Australian Safer CommunitiesAwards

On October 8th, at a function in SES Headquarters, the “Floods and You” project was announced as the 2008 Tasmania winner of the Education, Training and Research category of the award, and just one of three award recipients across all eight categories.

The project is an automatic nomination for the national Awards to be announced by the Attorney General in Canberra on Nov 11.

Congratulations to Maria Fletcher of Heritage Factory, for her outstanding work in delivering this project, and to all participants, such as Invermay Primary School.

Floods and You - a resource for teachers 

As a result of the Floods and You Pilot Education Strategy, a  draft educational resource kit for Tasmanian primary school teachers is now available as a free download from this site.

Evaluation project

We are also currently seeking Australian primary schools in flood affected communities, to participate in an evaluation of the kit, by encouraging you to download and trial the kit, and provide feedback to us, in order to further develop the materials for use Australia wide.

Meander Primary School and Invermay Primary School students took advantage of recent floods in their communities, to put into practise innovative educational strategies, developed as part of the Floods and You Community Awareness Project.

On 27th June, 2007 at the Inveresk site of the Queen Victoria Museum & Art Gallery, Deputy Mayor of Launceston, Jodie Campbell, launched an exhibition of work produced as a result of the Floods and You Community Awareness Project.

The work of Invermay Primary School and Meander Primary School was displayed for three weeks and showcased innovative and highly creative methods by which Flood awareness may be implemented as a key part of classroom activity and curriculum planning.

Floods and You was a community awareness project that aimed to help communities in Tasmania at high risk of flood understand their level of flood risk and know what to do when a flood warning is issued.
